Cavalry

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

After further consideration I have decided not to split the Horse Roles further. Nor will I add counter-charge and receiving-fire to the melee phases. Both changes, I feel, are complications that will detract from the game.

I will however rename Pistols to Cavalry, and may add a paragraph explaining my thoughts on these matters.

Horse Roles

Another revision I’m considering is dividing the pistol cavalry role into two according to their tactical style – Dutch (Reiter) or Swedish (Charging Home).

Also maybe add counter-charging and receiving fire to melee rules.

Initial Play-Testing

Using software based around MapMaker I have started play-testing my ECW rules. As a result I intend to increase the movement costs.

Game Mechanics

My in-house rules have:

  • polyhedral dice: troop differences reflected by differently shaped dice. No need for long lists of adjustment factors and a calculator – just throw the relevant dice!
  • movement controlled by the hexes. Cost in movement points (MPs) to enter a hex depends on the terrain in that hex. Roll for MPs at start of movement phase.
  • battle-deck of cards to control turns and phases or actions within turns.
  • army-deck of cards to control order of movement and melee within a movement-melee phase.
  • coloured counters to show troop status.

Hex Mat

Rather than using rulers to measure distance why not use a terrain mat overlaid with a hex-grid?

For me using rulers is fraught with danger – the fewer tools I have to manipulate the better.

Such a grid would also enable easy definitions of troop facing and flank and rear attacks
