Time Periods

Introduction

One of the many ways by which the hobby of wargaming can be classified is that of time period. Thus for historical1, land2 based wargames, we have:

  • Ancients
  • Renaissance
  • 18th Century
  • Napoleonic
  • American Civil War
  • Colonial
  • 20th Century
  • Modern

These broad time periods are differentiated by criteria such as military technology, army organization and battlefield tactics, and may be further sub-divided. There may also be differences of opinion about the precise dates marking the start and end of each time period.
