Welcome to Warfare in the 17th Century
This site is all about my interest in the military history of that era and the recreation of its battles in miniature as well as the conduct of new campaigns in the fictional realm of The Island Grand Duchy of Keltenbard.
Like Caesar's Gaul this site is divided into three parts:
- Articles about the history, military or otherwise but chiefly military, of the 17th Century. In this area the concentration is on the conflict known as the English Civil War (1642 - 1651). However, it also looks at the wider theatres of Europe and the World.
- This area, in the main, contains reports of my wargaming battles that recreate the historic engagements of the 17th Century. In addition it presents my personal views, reviews and comments on all aspects of the wargaming hobby, such as rules, models and ancillary equipment.
- Tales from Keltenbard, my imagined Grand Duchy and the setting for many of my non-historic campaigns with battles fought in the style of the 17th Century. As well as battle reports there are details of that land's geography, history, politics and social structure.
Cutting across this three-fold division will be my Projects. These will bring together research articles on the historical background or essays regarding Keltenbard with battle reports and comments on the wargaming aspects involved.
This site is also home to my MapMaker software with which the diagrams used in my battle reports are produced. The MapMaker interface itself may be found here, and the interface documentation is on this page
